San Diego Hotel Increases Minimum Wage to $10 Per Hour

San Diego, CA, December 8, 2014 – The Porto Vista Hotel, located in historic Little Italy, announced today that it will increase their minimum wage to $10 per hour effective January 1, 2015.  All employees who currently receive minimum wage will be increased to $10 per hour before California law requires it.

There has been plenty of talk and debate about the minimum wage across the nation. Effective July 1, 2014, the minimum wage in California was raised to $9.00 per hour. According to the California Department of Labor Standards Enforcement it will increase again in the future.  Every Porto Vista Hotel employee will make more than California’s required minimum wage. The reason for the voluntary increase is to “…help employees keep up with the cost of living and compensate them for their hard work,” says hotel owner, Moe Siry.

Increasing the minimum wage in advance will not only benefit employees but also the economy. As a small business owner himself, Siry believes in supporting local businesses. By increasing the minimum wage for his employees, they can contribute to other businesses, therefore adding to the growth of the economy as a whole.

Although many employers downsize when minimum wage increases, the Porto Vista Hotel will not reduce its workforce. The hotel will compensate the same number of employees while still increasing the minimum wage. “We are thrilled to do this for our hard-working employees,” says General Manager, Thomas Goodwill. “They go above and beyond to help us offer a great product and provide excellent customer service to guests.”
